For a series of misunderstandings, at the beginning of the serie Zel and Rina fight on opposite sides (also because of Rezo's lies) but then they understand that it's better to join their forces. In the past his greater desire was to become strong, so he addressed his grandfather-greatgranfather(?) Rezo, a very powerful wizard (also known as the red priest) hoping he would help him. BIG MISTAKE!! His beloved grandfather surely made him stronger, but transforming him in a chimera (an hybrid demon, troll, golem and human being). Very probably his character has been influenced from his curse: he is secretive,he doesn't love to be among people, he rarely smiles (only Amelia succeeds in cheering him up...)and he always refuses to support his friends' foolish actions (except in an episode in which they use him as an anchor ...).
Among Slayers fandom, he's one of the most popular (usually among female fandom..) even if,in my opinion, he's got the worst temper: if before the curse he wanted to become strong, now his only goal is that of finding a cure. It's nearly an obsession for him and he would do anything to have it (ex fight against Amelia, or, as law in the manga, ally with Shabranigdo!). His introvertion, his cruel fighting methods make him very similar to villains!
However Zel too, like all the Slayers' characters, improves towards the series, probably thanks to the influence of Amelia, with whom He pairs in combats (unfortunately only in the combats) because they both use white magic. Zel is also a skilled swordsman and good with shamanistic magic. His more common attacs are: Astral Vine, Blastbomb , Raywing , Ra Tilt
